Nude Yoga FAQs:

Why Nude Yoga?

Moving without clothes offers another layer to a typical practice by taking all physical and energetic layers off your body. Sometimes nudity holds lots of information; we are completely exposed not only to others, but to ourselves. Typically the lower third of your torso is kept hidden and private for a variety of reasons. Nudity encourages you to become more conscious in all areas of your body, mind, and heart to help build your confidence, increase the intimacy with yourself, and to explore the full-spectrum of your life.

I’m reluctant to attend because of my body shape, size, age. I don't have the perfect body, will I feel out of place?

Being naked in 'public' is a fear a lot of people have and being naked and practicing yoga can be intimidating. Our society is driven by an unrealistic ideal of physical beauty, which can fuel an array of insecurities and self-doubt. Most people don't have the body of a model and yet, we hold ourselves to those standards.

Body shapes, sizes, and ages very greatly in each class. This class is to help you gain confidence by accepting and loving your body as it is. It can be a very healing experience. Sometimes just showing up and sitting on your mat in class is the hardest step, but for those who have done this work, it often proves to be a source of positive body image reinforcement. Even if doing this just gives you a new point of reference like, “I didn’t die”, that’s a win over the negative self-talk that can limit your learning through new experiences.

What if I know someone in class?

Great!  You’ll have more to talk about. The class is created to be safe and private. All sorts of people attend class (straight, gay, bisexual, trans, curious, married, single, younger, older, skinny, larger, local, visitors). Community is built on trust and respect for each other.

I have an injury/medical condition. Should I take this class?

Generally speaking the answer is yes. You will want to tell me (your teacher) about your issues before class so we can modify your practice. You should always consult a physician before you start any exercise program.

Can I come if I’m a beginner?

This class is inclusive to all levels of yoga practice and great for beginners. It will be challenging but it’s not complicated. I break everything down in detail and move at an intentional pace. You can stop and take breaks when you need them without asking for permission. It’s a supportive and non judgmental experience.

What if I’m not flexible?

I encourage you to develop a flexible mind. You don't need to be physically flexible. All you need is to focus on releasing your expectations, sweating, breathing, moving, and exploring your awareness.

What if I get aroused?

Even though this is a non-sexual class ,every once in a while things come up. Moving without clothes spreads your sexual energy around. Instead of being focused on one area of your body, once class begins, the postures demand your attention which makes it more difficult to focus on anything else. When students get aroused during class they have the option to sit in a resting position until it goes away or continue to practice on.

Yes, erections happen, but that’s one of the reasons nudity is a great equalizer and a great energizer. It happens much less often than you expect as you’re moving pretty vigorously. There is less power to the genitals alone and more overall ability to accept yourself in the moment. The regular students also create an atmosphere of camaraderie over sexualized nudity.

Can I join nude yoga without being naked at first?

To respect our community agreement, all participants must be fully nude in order to keep everyone on the same level and within equal boundaries and expectations. This is what Courage is all about.

I don't want to practice yoga. Do you mind if I just watch?

In order to foster and protect our community, everyone who attends must participate. Observers are not allowed. Video and photography is also not allowed.

Why is it important to practice good hygiene?

During our time together, we will be in close quarters. Personal hygiene and cleanliness is especially important since you will be nude. Dress comfortably, we will all be invited to get naked after the opening circle and consent chat. Practice good hygiene before arriving to class: take a shower, brush your teeth, and use the restroom. Sweating is normal during physical activity.

Why is it important to be on time?

Walking into class after it has started is distracting and to other students and the teacher. In order to protect community privacy and comfort, I lock the door at the beginning of class. Your reservation is guaranteed only up to 5 minutes after the start of class.  To avoid disappointment, please plan to arrive 15 minutes early. Allow plenty of extra time for transportation delays.
